(Pathfinder Guide West & South Lakeland)
(Walk#6 Ravenglass & Muncaster - 4.5 Miles)
Having arrived in the metropolis of Ravenglass around 1pm on the Saturday, and having checked into the Pennington hotel for 2 nights we decided to do a short walk around the local area.
The weather had improved a little from the Dales, though still looked like it could rain, we opted for a short 4 mile walk, setting off along the (one and only) main street and onto the beach.
We walked up the beach a short way, and found a track at the end (though different to how the guidebook described it!), and then crossed under the railway (The narow gauge steam railway `Lil Ratty!). This brought us out onto a grassy lane and fields around leading to the ruins of the Roman bath house.
The walk toook us over easy, grassy grounds with little incline, and through woodlands entering Muncaster Castle grounds.
The approach to the castle grounds was very pleasant with many bright flowering plants and different species of trees. You are allowed to pass through the castle grounds as it is a right of way, but cannot deviate from the suggested path to explore the grounds. To do this it is required to purchase a walkers ticket, though today we did not bother as we had visited the castle previously.
It was a pleasant diversion from the fields and woodlands, and we left along the roadway through the arch on the picture above, leading out onto a lane and then an A road for a short distance, before taking a farm access track.
The walk from there was through more woodland. Through here you can take a right track to Muncaster Mill, though we did not as conditions were likely to be extra muddy, so we took the middle track to avoid this, and this brought us back to the beach. The picture below shows that the tide was now in, as we had to walk along the bottom of the wall in the distance, though there was a small ledge to do this. If not you can back track and find an alternative route back to the village from the woodland.
We arrived back at the Pennington hotel around 16:00 and dined in their restaurant that evening for a respectable £23 a head for 3 courses. The food was great, though limited choice in the restaurant (see last post for more on this).
A short walk with some views of the estuary from a small height and views to the beautiful Sellafield nuclear fuel reprocessing facility!
Fields and woodland mainly and added interest of Muncaster Castle and a Roman bath house ruin.
Our Walk Score: 5.5/10
