Friday 18th July
A very warm summers day we set off with a fully loaded vehicle, bikes on the back, destination Brecon, South Wales.
A leisurely drive down leaving around 9:00 with a stop near Tamworth at the motorway services, saw us arriving in Brecon town around 14:30. (268 Miles from Cleethorpes)
We stopped at Morrison's in Brecon for supplies, then rang the owner of the property we were staying at (Beynon House) and arrived around 15:30 with the owner already there to show us around.
Beynon House is a new property built only a couple of years ago and is less than a mile from Brecon town centre. It's on a fairly busy road in to the town, so there is a little bit of noise. However the property is accessed from a driveway at the side and the back door via a very large wooden veranda directly overlooking the Brecon & Monmouthshire Canal... like almost right over it!! A beautiful setting.
The large living room leads directly out to the wonderful veranda, and then a small hallway through to the kitchen and downstairs loo.
The kitchen had all the facilities we needed, including dishwasher, and had a nice view out onto the canal.
Upstairs has two bedrooms, one double, one twin (no picture of the double, forgot to take one). The double bedroom leads into the bathroom/loo. The twin bedroom also had an en-suite with shower albeit a very small one.
The picture below shows the large veranda, and much time over the week was spent here enjoying the sights of the boats, ducks and wild life on the canal, the resident mouse, and the unbelievable amount of joggers using the track/road on the other side of the canal.
Saturday 19th July
The weather forecast for the week for very hot temperatures, except for Friday night and Saturday which forecast storms. This was true as we had much rain late evening and through the night. This continued to look unsettled Saturday morning. Mid-morning it looked a little better so we walked into Brecon, and had a look around the town.
It's a quirky sort of small town, with snickets here and there, but no shops of any real substance really, and some parts do look a bit tired. There were a couple of craft fairs taking place, one was rubbish the other a little better, but not our cup of tea.
The area around the canal basin is nicer, with a theatre, cinema and cafe with outdoor seating.
Having walked back, and after a late lunch we decided to walk back along the canal to the basin and hire a motor boat for an hour. This was £24 for the hour, and we put-putted off away from the basin and along the narrow canal.
Quite a few holiday cottages along the canal leaving the town.
Then after a short time we passed our own accommodation Beynon House.
No-one home!!
Sue took over Skipper duties, and I kicked back and just enjoyed the views.
Back at the basin again, we returned the boat in one piece, Susan making a twenty-point turn to get the boat moored up...
More nice cottages, and hanging baskets!
We walked back again, and settled in with the now improved weather and enjoyed relaxing with the canal views.
