Happy (Wet) New Year - Stanage Edge

1st January 2012 - Happy New Year!
(Stanage Edge - Peak District)

A Happy New Year to all our readers (we know who you are - Andy!)

Decided to celebrate the start of the new year with a short trip to Stanage Edge. The forecast was fairly good with 25% chance of rain predicted and higher chance later in the afternoon. It was fine (and a bit of sun) in Cleethorpes when we set off early-ish at around 8:45am.

We parked at Upper Burbage Bridge car park around 10:15, which is very near to the edge itself, rather than a long walk, this was set to be around 5 or 6 miles only, expecting rain by the afternoon. The car park was busy, and it is free, but no facilities, just a park site near the road, before Hathersage.

The weather looked very dull and rain looked likely.

We set off across the track leading up to Stanage Edge...

By Half-way up the rain decided to start early, so we sheltered for a while and then chose to press on to the top as the rain came down heavier. (A good test of the new gear though!, and guess what it worked, and kept me dry!)

We reached the trig point, and had to hold on as the wind was strong at the top, and with the lashing rain made it difficult to see as it blew into your eyes.

We had a look around at the top and took a few pictures, but decided the rain (and wind) were possibly here for the day so abaandoned any thoughts of pressing on along the edge.

We descended back to the car park, but decided we will  return on a finer, less windy day!

30th December 2011 - Grainthorpe

30th December 2011 - Grainthorpe
(Country Walking Route, 8.5 miles)

We set off after parking adjacent to the church in Grainthorpe village on a dry, cool December morning. The intention was to walk off several days of Xmas indulgence and also test some xmas walking gear aquired. (Paramo Mountain Vent pull on, Velez adventure trousers, and a Rab stretch neo jacket). Though today the waterproof test would not be conducted, due to lack of rain!

We set off around 10:00 through the village, then across waht appeared to be someones garden, and then across open field paths.

We came across a shooting party after a few miles (having heard shots some distance away).

From here we crossed the ditch and followed a long gravel track then a roadway for several miles before reaching Louth Canal, and a stop for Soup and sarnies.

We followed the Louth Canal bank for about a mile and a half before leaving it and more flat fileds and tracks to take us back to Grainthorpe village.

Not the most exciting walk, but a walk on a fine day is OK and it was pleasant enough.

Our Walk Score: 5/10
