Brecon Beacons 5th/6th July 2013

Brecon Beacons Friday 5th July 2013

We set off for South Wales from Cleethorpes around 9am, heading for the M180/M18/M1/M42, skirting Birmingham and then heading more cross country A-road towards Hereford and into Wales.

The plan was to head for Brecon itself, and we parked up at Morrisons supermarket around 14:00 to stock up with fresh provisions (after a look in the tourist information centre and a quick recce of the place).

Brecon is a quaint sort of place with quite a few general shops, a Cotswolds Outdoors, and a beautiful river (Usk) and canal (Brecon & Monmouthshire).

After Morrisons we set the Sat nav for Llaneglwys near to the cottage, but had been given a hand-drawn map to find the place due to its remote location. They were not joking! The place was around 8 miles north of Brecon, but accesssed via a maze of about 6 miles of single track lanes with passing places.

Rheol Barn is a recent barn conversion with all modern amenities, 3 bedrooms, a very large living room/diner, large kitchen, and master bedroom with en-suite. A long driveway with access gate leads to the open driveway seen above. A very nice picnic table with parasol is provided with beautiful views over nearby woodland and hillside - Nice!

The back garden is lawn with a storage "summerhouse" and wooden bench. The "Garden" immediately backing onto adjacen open fields and rolling hillside. Watch out for the Red Kites gliding and swooping around.

Kitchen with all required amenities, dishwasher, freezer, fridge, cooker, microwave, plenty of cupboards for storage.

Large bath in seperate bathroom.

Large master bedroom with en-suite.

The sheep in the next field were noisy!

Brecon Pathfinder Guide Walk #18
7.5 Miles - 3hrs, 50 mins

We woke on Saturday to glorious sunshine (the weather was set to be kind all week) and decided to drive to the Mountain Centre South of Brecon and do a low level walk giving us views of the higher Brecon mountains around that we would hopefully tackle later in the week.

Note that the route was not 10.7 Miles (about 7.5miles), but Satmap GPS kept locking up. First time in 4 Years. Have since found out its my new 25k Brecon SD card, and is part of a faulty batch of cards. Cheers for letting us know Satmap, as you knew the dodgy batch number, and you sold me the card. Ah, well, good job I had the full UK 50k map card for the rest of the trip.

The centre was busy as a wedding reception was taking place later that day.
The centre consists of a large car park (Pay & Display £2 all day I think), a shop and information centre about all things Brecon, and a Cafe.

Setting off walking around 10:30, the crowds reduced just a few hundred feet away from the centre and we hardly saw a soul for the remainder of the walk.
The views around were good of Pen-Y-Fan and the Brecon Range and rolling green hillsides abounded all around... and yes, LOTS of sheep.

Nice View of the mountains, and............................. a large thistle!

As the day progressed the sun beamed down, and it got hotter, and hotter, and so did we!
There were a few hilly bits, and we struggled on in the heat of the mid-day sun.

An inquisitive horse!

Hills, so green and rolling!

Despite the heat it was an enjoyable walk giving us a general appreciation of the terrain around, a good start to set us in the mood for the higher hills.

Despite a low level walk, the weather was HOT, and by the end of it, we were really ready for finishing. There were a few hilly bits but nothing drastic or steep, just shows how the heat saps your energy.

We retreated to the cafe at the muontain centre for an ice cream, delicious local stuff from Brecon Dairy, and cooled off.

Our Walk Score: 6.5/10
