North Yorkshire Moors & The Dales June 2010

Friday 25th June 2010

We set off Friday morning having decided to go to Flamingo Land to use the free day pass tickets that work had provided in lieu of being unable to attend the coach trip a few weeks earlier.
These tickets were actually the ones from last year having missed the same trip in 2009. I had not claimed my free tickets this year but the tickets I had did not have an end date on them, simply stating open dated access.

However...... on arriving, the tickets would not scan at the barrier, and the ticket guy told us they were out of date and not valid. How can an open dated ticket be out of date!!! Even the small print on the back made no mention of the duration of the ticket.
Eventually after speaking directly to the manager and mentioning who I work for we were given "valid" tickets. I would not have paid the £25 per head entry fee as we only decided to go as we were heading nearby anyway.

Having spent a few hours in there we thought that while the zoo part was okay the park in general was a bit run-down when comparing with others (certainly not worth the £25 entry fee).
That's just our opinion but personally I would rather pay another ten pounds and go to Alton Towers which has more thrill rides, no animals but fantastic gardens and is worth every penny of the bit more expensive entry fee.

We left mid afternoon and headed for our accomodation near Pickering.
This was Barker Stakes Farm http://www.barkerstakesfarm.com/

This is located a few miles outside of Pickering along a narrow track road with nothing much else nearby. It is farm buildings set around a court yard which have all been tastefully convertered and modernised. Our "room" or apartment had recently been finished, and consisted of a mid sized bedroom with good facilities including TV/DVD, tea/coffee making, and a small fridge. The en-suite bathroom was modern with a good sized shower. The buildings were previously stable/ farm buildings as the stable type door (in modern style) had been retained. Outside were patio areas with table and chairs looking onto a large lawn and courtyard.

The room rate was £75 per night for a double room including breakfast. I believe larger luxury rooms with private verandah/4 poster were priced at £85.

We settled in and changed for the concert we had booked at nearby Dalby Forest (Keane).
The drive was about 5 or 6 miles taking us right into the forest with plenty of guides and the route marked clearly. The weather was very good (had been hot for weeks!) and we found a spot to place our chairs and cool box. We enjoyed an evening of three bands but Keane themselves were very good though we did leave a little before the end to avoid the rush out.
This paid off and we had a clear run back to Barker Stakes farm.
