North Wales 7th-16th July 2012

Anglesey July 7th-9th

We travelled to Anglesey on Saturday 7th July, to Treysgawen Hall Hotel, having booked this for 2 nights under a KGB deal.

We arrived early afternoon, finding a rather grand looking building with large grounds located near Llangefni (a few miles from the town). The hotel sits back from the main road and is approached by a narrow road well over a mile from the roadway, though there is a clear sign (which we saw after the turn!).

The hotel has its own spa facilities, and there are fine woodland tracks within the grounds which we took time to walk through that afternoon. The weather was sunny, which was great considering the bad summer we had to date, it was good to see a warmer day.

As part of the KGB deal we had afternoon tea included on arrival, so after checking into the room we had the afternoon tea, consisting of sandwich, scone and tea/coffee.

As you can see its a grand old place, and there was even a bottle of sparkling wine on ice in the room (again part of the deal). Nice!!

We ate in the bar in the evening, which whilst not cheap was fairly priced for the quality of the place. The food was excellent.

Sunday July 8th - Holyhead - South Stack

Anglesey Coastal Walks: Walk 15: Holyhead Mountain (5.6 Miles, 3hrs, 30 mins)

Having visited Holyhead South Stack and its lighthouse in September 2010 we decided to go back and do a short walk to North Stack and Holyhead mountain. The day was less nice than Saturday, and threatened rain.

We parked near to South Stack at about 10:00, and followed the track to Ellins tower (built as a summer retreat in 1867). Taking the steps uphill we then saw South Stack lighthouse and stopped to admire the view along the cliffs and birds flying up ahead.

We came to a ruined look out (an old telegraph station built in 1827 to semaphore via a chain of these stations between Holyhead and Liverpool).

The path continues on from the ruined telegraph station and ahead the sea mist came down spoiling the views.

The path then headed inland towards Holyhead mountain, gaining height and twisting and turning before we arrived after about 2 miles, at North Stack.

At this point we followed the path round to a house and a narrow path adjacent the wall of the house leading to the end of the cliff. Here we could see the island of North Stack and a sea cave in the cliff face.

There were some climbers practicing their moves on the cliff......

Also a fishing boat, which appeared to be attracting the sea lions.......

We headed away from North Stack and the rain began. We followed a path taking us to the other side of Holyhead Mountain, into some misty conditions again, along rocky and sometimes indistinct paths. We never did find the actual summit of Holyhead "Mountain", but according to the GPS we were very close! (and of course it was now too misty to enjoy any views)

The walk back to the car park was wet and misty, and we arrived back having enjoyed the earlier part of the walk, but the latter stages less so.

We drove back to Anglesey, and had some fish and chips in Benllech, before going back to the hotel and a warm bath.

Our Walk Score: 7/10
