Saturday 14th July - Portmerion & Bodnant Garden

Saturday 14th July - Portmerion & Bodnant Garden

A fair Saturday morning and we checked out of our hotel and drove the short distance to Portmerion

Portmerion was built by Clough Williams Ellis, beginning in 1925 and spending 50 years building the village.

The village is now mainly for tourists only, apart from a hotel and a few cottages. The other buildings are for viewing and there are a few shops and cafes/tea-tooms.

Entry to the park is around £10 each giving access for the day, a free film show and rides on a road train through the forest.

The various pastel colours make for an unusual collection of buildings.

There is a forest and a coastal trail that can be folllowed, routes are colour coded and there was a map in the guide leaflet picked up at the entrance.

The road train was a half hour trip through the forest tracks with stops to view the scene above the village and another at the large pond.

The Calawander strawberry sundaes were excellent (buy one-get one free)

Having spent a full morning at Portmerion we moved on North to Bodnant Garden nearer to Llandudno area.

Bodnant Garden

Bodnant Garden was given to the National Trust in 1949 by Henry McLaren the 2nd Baron of Aberconway. It covers 80 Acres and has mayn styles of gardens, waterfalls and ponds among the many tracks and trails.

We spent several hours here before eating an early tea in the Cafe/Restaurant near the entrance, and then drove the short distance to out final hotel of the trip.

Our final stay was at TheLodge in Tal-Y-Bont a few miles south of Conwy.

The style of this place was more like a Travelodge, with simple but clean rooms set apart from the main building in groups of lodges. The owner was very welcoming, showing us to our room and very friendly. We paid £89 for 2 nights on the KGB deal including cooked breakfast.
