Friday/Saturday 5th & 6th June - Brecon Beacons

A return to the Brecon Beacons for the 3rd year running, and returning for the 2nd time to Beynon House in Brecon itself.

We had a good steady journey down from Cleethorpes, stoppiing for lunch near Tamworth at the services before hitting the more pleasant rolling contryside of South Wales and the Brecon Beacons.

A supermarket stop in Brecon for provisions and then we met the cottage owner for the key around 15:30, unpacked and settled in. The cottage is right on the Brecon & Monmouthshire canal side, a nice spot and just on the edge of Brecon town itself. The only downside is perhaps the fairly busy road the cottage stands on (an issue when it's hot because obviously you want windows open and then traffic noise bother-some).

Brecon Rugby club field directly opposite.

Plenty of space in the living room with TV/Freeview (No Wi-Fi though).

Small kitchen, but with usual facilities, inlcluding dishwasher.

Main bedroom, with en-suite bathroom with bath/shower.

Large off road parking area.

On Saturday the weather was forecast to be not too great, so after breakfast we decided upon a drive west across to Llandovery, then south and back. Not that impressed to be honest with the terrain and places compared with those nearer Brecon. Llandovery itself did not really have that much to offer as far as we could see, and we arrived back mid-afternoon a bit underwhelmed. Stick to the Central/Eastern Brecon area I think. Sorry!

Sunday 7th June

The forecast for Sunday and the rest of the week was much better, and so we decided on a short, easy walk nearby as Susan's ankle was still not right for pushing up mountains.

Cwm Oergwm - 7.5 Miles from Llanfrynach

Llanfrynach is a small village just a few miles from Brecon, but we decided to drive there rather than push up the distance of the walk. We parked up roadside in the small village and headed off though the village late morning in the Sunday sunshine.

Soon after leaving the village we were on woodland tracks, very picturesque with the sun shining through the trees.

After about a mile, the woodland track opened out to National Trust land - Cwm Oergwm and wide expansive valley views. Easy walking on grassy, part stony tracks on a beautiful day.

This was pretty much the terrain for 2.5 miles before reaching the furthest point and a series of small waterfalls. We rested here, ate, and took plenty of photographs, tripod mounted Canon 6D SLR, 16-35mm L IS Lens, with 0.6 Soft ND Grad, polariser filters, slow shutter speeds using remote trigger.

Just after packing away the camera gear, a hiking club arrived from the opposite direction, a very large party of around 20 hikers. After a wait for them all to go by along the narrow track we took this path back. It ran in parallel to the track we set out on, but did offer slightly different terrain and viewpoints, so added a little more interest rather than following the same track back.

Nice, green, rolling valley views.

Some woodland path to add more interest!

Followed by some "off-roading" across fields, though they are public rights of way and some obvious paths through crops.

Very open views.

We finished mid-afternoon, and drove the short distance back to Brecon, relaxing back at the cottage watching the canal life , ducks and boats go by.

A pleasant easy walk, with woodland, open valley views and waterfalls mid-way. Plenty of interest.

Our Walk Score: 7/10
