Monday/Tuesday 8th & 9th June 2015

Monday/Tuesday 8th & 9th June 2015

Monday 8th June - Cardiff

Monday was spent in Cardiff, just over an hours drive from Brecon. Parked up near Cardiff Bay and walked into the city centre from there (about 20-25 minutes walk).
A peruse of the many shops, including John Lewis, lunch at TGI Friday, more shops, walk back, an ice cream sundae at Cadwalders on the Mermaid Quay, and then back to Brecon by early evening.

We can thoroughly recommend Cardiff for shops, eating out etc, a really nice city.

Tuesday 9th June - Brecon/Monmouthshire Canal Cycle

Tuesday, and an activity day after the shops of Cardiff on Monday.
Late Breakfast, then bikes out, cross the canal and cycle along the towpath towards Tal-Y-Bont. All part of the Taff Trail that runs from Brecon to Cardiff, the initial leg along the tow path of the Brecon & Monmouthshire Canal.

Easy cycling along fairly wide towpaths up to the first lock gates at Brynich.
From there cross the bridge to the other side of the canal and follow the now narrower track along the canal.
About 7.5 miles each way.

We stopped around mid-day about 5 miles out of Brecon at the Royal Oak pub at Pencelli.
Sat in the beer garden and ordered 2 sandwich platters with chips. Very large portions, and nice beer. Before long however, we were cycling on our way again.

We stopped just after Tal-Y-Bont at the approach to Ashford tunnel. It seemed like a good place to stop and turnaround rather than continue uphill along the road to bypass the tunnel.

Heading back and a picture stood on top of the many stone bridges across the canal.

Almost back to Brecon, and a view across to Pen-Y-Fan in the distance.

The view of our cottage from the canal tow path.

A nice, pleasant easy cycle along the canal with opportunity for pubs in Pencelli and Tal-y-Bont.

Our Cycle score: 8/10
